फ़िरोज़ पत्र लेकर घर लौटा, पत्र को अपने तकिए के नीचे रखा, अपना सामान तैयार किया, रात घर पर बिताई और सुबह अपने गंतव्य के लिए प्रस्थान किया, न जाने राजा ने उसके साथ क्या किया।

इसी बीच जैसे ही फिरोज आंखों से ओझल हो गया, राजा चुपचाप फिरोज के घर पहुंच गया और धीरे से फिरोज के घर का दरवाजा खटखटाया। फ़िरोज़ की पत्नी ने पूछा कौन है? राजा ने कहा: मैं राजा हूं, तुम्हारे पति का स्वामी हूं। उसने दरवाज़ा खोला और राजा अंदर आकर बैठ गया।

फ़िरोज़ की पत्नी को आश्चर्य हुआ और बोली: आज हमारे गरीब घर में बादशाह सलामत आये हैं। राजा ने कहा: मैं यहाँ अतिथि बनकर आया हूँ। फ़िरोज़ की पत्नी बादशाह का आशय समझ गई और बोली, मैं अल्लाह की शरण लेती हूँ, आपके इस प्रकार आने से मुझे कोई भलाई नहीं दिखाई देती।

राजा ने गुस्से में कहा: हे लड़की, तुम क्या कह रही हो? शायद तुमने मुझे पहचाना नहीं, मैं तुम्हारे पति का मालिक राजा हूँ।

फ़िरोज़ की पत्नी ने कहा: बादशाह सलामत, मैं जानती हूँ कि आप बादशाह हैं, लेकिन बुज़ुर्गों ने कहा है कि शेर कितना भी भूखा हो, मुर्दा खाना शुरू नहीं करेगा। और राजा को शांति मिले! आप उस कटोरे से पानी पीने आये हैं जिससे आपके कुत्ते ने पानी पिया है।

राजा उस स्त्री की बात से बहुत शर्मिंदा हुआ और उसे छोड़कर वापस चला गया लेकिन अपनी चप्पलें वहीं छोड़ गया।

अब फ़िरोज़ को आधे रास्ते में याद आया कि राजा ने जो पत्र उसे दिया था, वह उसने घर पर ही छोड़ दिया है। उसने तुरंत अपना घोड़ा वापस घुमाया और अपने घर की ओर सरपट दौड़ पड़ा। जब फ़िरोज़ अपने घर पहुँचा तो तकिये के नीचे से पत्र निकालते समय उसकी नज़र बिस्तर के नीचे पड़ी राजा की चप्पलों पर पड़ी, जिसे वह जल्दबाजी में भूल गया था।

फ़िरोज़ का सिर चकरा गया और वह समझ गया कि राजा ने अपना उद्देश्य पूरा करने के लिए ही उसे यात्रा पर भेजा है। फिरोज बिना किसी को बताए चुपचाप घर से निकल गया। पत्र लेकर वह चला गया और काम ख़त्म करके राजा के पास लौटा और राजा ने उसे इनाम में सौ दीनार दिए। फ़िरोज़ दीनार लेकर बाज़ार गया और महिलाओं के उपयोग के लिए महँगे कपड़े और कुछ उपहार भी खरीदे। घर पहुँचकर उसने अपनी पत्नी को नमस्कार किया और कहा कि चलो तुम्हारे घर चलते हैं।

पत्नी ने पूछा: यह क्या है? उसने कहा: राजा ने इनाम दे दिया है और मैं चाहता हूं कि तुम इसे पहनो और अपने परिवार को दिखाओ। पत्नी ने कहा जैसी आपकी इच्छा. पत्नी तैयार होकर पति के साथ मायके चली गयी. दामाद–बेटी और अपने साथ लाए उपहार देखकर वे बहुत खुश हुए।

फ़िरोज़ अपनी पत्नी को छोड़कर वापस आ गया और एक महीने बाद भी उसने न तो अपनी पत्नी से कुछ सुना और न ही उसे वापस बुलाया। फिर कुछ दिनों के बाद उसका जीजा उससे मिलने आया और उससे पूछा: फ़िरोज़! आप हमें अपनी बहन से नाराज़गी और नाराज़गी का कारण बताइये, नहीं तो हम आपको जज के सामने पेश कर देंगे।

तो उसने कहा: तुम चाहो तो कर लो, लेकिन तुम्हारी बहन का कोई हक नहीं जो मैंने न चुकाया हो. वे लोग अपना मामला काजी के पास लेकर गये तो काजी ने फिरोज को बुलाया।

काजी उस समय राजा के पास बैठा था। लड़की के भाइयों ने कहा: अल्लाह राजा को सुरक्षित रखे और क़ाज़ी अल–क़ादा को हमेशा के लिए स्थापित करे। न्यायाधीश! हमने इस आदमी को एक हरा–भरा बगीचा, पेड़ों और फलों से भरा हुआ और ताजे पानी का एक कुआं सौंपा, उसने हमारे बगीचे को नष्ट कर दिया, सभी फल खा गए, पेड़ों को काट दिया और कुएं को क्षतिग्रस्त कर दिया और इसे बंद कर दिया।

क़ाज़ी ने फ़िरोज़ की ओर मुख करके पूछाः हाँ बेटे, तुम इस विषय में क्या कहते हो? फीरोज ने कहा, जो बाग मुझे काजी साहब ने दिया था, वह मैंने अच्छी हालत में लौटा दिया है। क़ाज़ी ने पूछाः क्या उसने तुम्हें बाग़ उसी हाल में लौटा दिया है, जैसा पहले था? उसने कहा: हाँ, वह उसी हालत में लौटा दिया गया है, लेकिन हम उससे बाग लौटाने का कारण पूछना चाहते हैं।

क़ाज़ी: हाँ फ़िरोज़, तुम इस बारे में क्या कहना चाहते हो? फ़िरोज़ ने कहा: क़ाज़ी साहब, मैंने बाग को किसी द्वेष या घृणा के कारण नहीं छोड़ा बल्कि इसलिए छोड़ा कि एक दिन जब मैं बाग में आया तो मैंने उसमें शेर के पंजे के निशान देखे, इसलिए मुझे डर था कि शेर खा जाएगा। मैं. इसलिए मैंने शेर के सम्मान के कारण बगीचे में जाना बंद कर दिया है.

राजा जो लेटा हुआ था यह सब सुन रहा था उठ कर बोला। फ़िरोज़ा! शांति और संतुष्टि के साथ अपने बगीचे में जाएँ। अल्लाह की कसम, इसमें कोई शक नहीं कि शेर तुम्हारे बगीचे में आया, लेकिन वह वहां कोई छाप नहीं छोड़ सका, न कोई पत्ता तोड़ सका, न कोई फल खा सका। वह कुछ देर वहां रुका और निराश होकर लौट आया और भगवान की कसम, मैंने तुम्हारे बगीचे के चारों ओर कभी इतनी मजबूत दीवारें नहीं देखीं।

फ़िरोज़ को राजा की बात पर विश्वास हो गया, इसलिए वह अपने घर लौट आया और अपनी पत्नी को भी वापस ले आया। न तो न्यायाधीश और न ही किसी अन्य को पता था कि क्या हुआ था।
